Third Quarter Rally Not Enough For Road Upset


WAVERLY, Iowa (January 8, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball team fell on the road to No. 14 Wartburg, 82-61, in Waverly, Iowa. 

A rally in the third quarter nearly allowed the Prairie Wolves to pull off the upset. Facing a 10 point halftime deficit, NWU came swinging to start the second half. The teams traded back-to-back baskets to open the half before a three-pointer by Delaney Roberts with just under seven minutes in the quarter ignited Nebraska Wesleyan. 

Roberts's three-pointer opened up an 18-8 run over the next 5:16. The run also saw Roberts score 13 of her team-best 19 points. A layup at the 1:48 mark in the third quarter from Anna Vandenack tied the game at 48. During the pivotal stretch, NWU caught fire on the offensive end of the court, going 4-for-6 from the three-point line and 7-for-11 from the field. 

However, the nationally-ranked Knights were able to counter the rally with a 30 point outburst in the fourth quarter.

The duo of Roberts and Vandenck carried Nebraska Wesleyan with a combined 34 points. The 19 points by Roberts is the second most by her in a game this season. Vandenack recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. It is the most rebounds in a game by Vandenack this season and also the third double-double of her season. Sarah Hultquist came off of the bench to provide 10 points.
