Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller, Splits Day One of Viking Classic


ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (September 17, 2021) - Nebraska Wesleyan volleyball went 1-1 on day one of the Viking Classic in Rock Island, Illinois. NWU, fell in game one, 3-0, to Knox College and won a five-set thriller in game two against Augustana College.

The Prairie Wolves stormed back midway through the final set to defeat the Vikings in game two. Faced with a 12-8 deficit, Nebraska Wesleyan forced Augustana to hit three straight attack errors before a kill from Nyah Chambers tied the set. 

Next, the teams traded points but the Prairie Wolves' momentum could not be stopped. Addie Thomas served an ace to give NWU the match point. Thomas then delivered the game-winning kill on the next play. 

Makenzie Scurto led a balanced attack for Nebraska Wesleyan in game two with 10 kills as Thomas added 9 kills and Lauren Maciejewski added seven kills. Chambers served a game-high five aces, which ties a single-game high by a Prairie Wolf this season. NWU had five different players record double-digit digs in the win.
 
In the day's first game, Knox College held the Prairie Wolves to a season-low 21 kills. The Prairie Fire also limited NWU to just three service aces, also a season-low. Erica Hopping had 11 assists and Kennady Klein tallied 13 digs for the match.

UP NEXT
Nebraska Wesleyan plays two more games at the Viking Classic in Rock Island, Illinois tomorrow, Saturday, September 18. NWU's first game is at 10 a.m. against Wisconsin-Platteview with their second game following at 2 p.m. against Lake Forest College.
