Omar Hernandez Joins NWU As Assistant Director of Athletic and Recreation Facilities


LINCOLN, Neb. (July 2, 2021) - Nebraska Wesleyan athletics announced that Omar Hernandez will be Assistant Director of Athletic and Recreation Facilities. Hernandez comes to NWU from Western Texas College, where he served as the Assistant Athletic Director/HPE Supervisor. Hernandez begins his role with the Prairie Wolves on July 30.

As the Assistant Athletic Director/HPE Supervisor at WTC, Hernandez oversaw daily operations of the HPE Fitness Center and Gymnasium, taught physical education courses, and assisted the athletic department with various tasks, which included team operations, social media coverage, sports information, promotions and marketing, and gameday operations. Hernandez joined the Westerners staff in January 2019. 

Prior to WTC, Hernandez was a student athletic trainer at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, working primarily with football and men's and women's basketball from 2012-2015. He also was a training camp intern for the Buffalo Bills in 2014. After a couple of years working in an administrative role for Texas Tech, Hernandez returned to sports with internships in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and with the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash in 2018.

Hernandez is originally from Wellington, Texas, where he assisted the Skyrockets football and baseball teams with various responsibilities and competed in track. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in 2016 and a Master of Science degree in 2018, both at Texas Tech University.

The position is a part of the Ethnic Minorities and Women in Sports Grant Program through the NCAA.
