Prairie Wolves Rally To Force Extra Innings, Comeback Falls Short

PELLA, Iowa (May 18, 2021) - Nebraska Wesleyan baseball (12-28) fell in the opening round of the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Baseball Tournament to Central College (14-25), 7-6 in 10 innings, in Pella, Iowa.

Central opened the game with five runs in the first two innings then tacked on an additional run in the fifth inning. However, the game was far from over as the Prairie Wolves would not go away easily. NWU rallied late with four runs in the sixth inning and a run in the seventh and eighth innings to force extra innings.

Noah Unger started the comeback with a sacrifice fly to score John Haimowitz. Mason Bennett hit a two-run single down the left-field line to bring in Will Scheneidewind and Alex Angele. Nebraska Wesleyan's final run of the inning came on a single up the middle by Derek Kolbush to plate Aaron Nichols.

In the seventh, Haimowitz went deep with a leadoff home run to right field to make it a one-score game. It was Haimowitz's third home run of the season. The game-tying run came off the bat of Kaleb Knox with a single up the middle to score Nichols in the eighth. But the Prairie Wolves stranded the go-ahead run at third base and an insurance run at second base.

After the teams traded three up and three downs in the ninth inning, the Dutch retired NWU in order in the 10th inning. An error allowed the leadoff batter to get on base before a pinch-hit single finished the game for CC.
