LINCOLN, Neb. (April 17, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team (9-13, 7-7 A-R-C) split a doubleheader with Luther College (19-10, 8-7 A-R-C). The Prairie Wolves won game one, 8-2, to give head coach
Mary Yori her 100th coaching win at NWU. She is just the third coach in program history to win at least 100 games. The Norse won game two, 5-3.Â
Game One Recap
Yori's 100th win at Nebraska Wesleyan was almost joined with another piece of history as Elise Warneke and Kailey Meyer nearly combined for NWU's first no-hitter since 2010. Warneke tossed five hitless innings before Meyer came in the sixth inning. Luther broke up the no-hit bid with a single in the top of the sixth inning. The two Prairie Wolf pitchers allowed just one hit in the win.
NWU provided run support early in the game with two runs in the first inning. Hanna Roth turned a Luther error into a run followed by a Kailey Meyer RBI to score Emma Alfieri. Nebraska Wesleyan also added runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Roth doubled to score Werneke then an inning later Werneke knocked a double of her own to score Valerie Gerlach.Â
A four-run sixth inning provided plenty of additional run support for the NWU pitchers. A two-out rally started by an RBI double from Kellie Lang followed by a single from Roth scored Lang for the first two runs of the inning. Alfieri then connected for another RBI double to drive in Roth before an RBI single from Taylor Styskal plated Alfieri to cap the run.Â
Game Two Recap
After nearly getting no-hit in game one, the Norse bounced back with five runs in the first three innings of game two. But the Prairie Wolves countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The rally started when Valerie Gerlach doubled to center field, which allowed Emma Alfieri to score. Alycin Braun, the next batter, hit a single to drive in Taylor Styskal. Rachel Mundt capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to plate Sydney Nickerson. However, NWU couldn't find enough momentum over the next three innings to win the game.
