ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( March 6, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team (1-5) split a doubleheader this afternoon. NWU fell to 12th-ranked Transylvania University (4-0), 11-5, in game one and bounced back to shutout Illinois College (3-7), 3-0, in game two to earn its first win of the season.
Game One Recap
The Prairie Wolves tied the game with a four run fourth-inning rally. After the Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, NWU manufactured another run to cut the deficit to 7-5. However, Transylvania added three more runs in the bottom of the frame and another run in the bottom of the sixth-inning. Hannah Lytle recorded two hits with Hanna Roth tallying two RBIs for Nebraska Wesleyan. Bailey Green tossed a game-high 12 first pitch strikes for NWU.
Game Two Recap
Kailey Meyer threw a gem in a shutout of Illinois College. She tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts and 19 first pitch strikes. The Prairie Wolves provided run support in the fourth-inning when it took a 1-0 lead then tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth-inning. Valerie Gerlach notched two RBIs and Rachel Mundt added another. Hannah Lytle drew two walks at the plate for NWU.
What's Next
Nebraska Wesleyan closes out the Fontbonne Tournament with two games on Sunday, March 7. Game one is against DePauw University at 1 p.m. and game two is against Fontbonne University at 3 p.m. Both games will be played in St. Louis, Mo.
