Central Outlasts Volleyball In Five-Set Heartbreaker

PELLA, Iowa (October 27, 2021) - The Nebraska Wesleyan volleyball team fell to Central College, 3-2, in Pella, Iowa. The match was the final 2021 American Rivers Conference match for NWU.

A back-and-forth match needed extra points to decide the fifth set. In the final set, the two teams combined for five match points, and neither team led by more than two points. But it was the Dutch that scored three consecutive points to erase a 17-16 deficit.

The stage was set for a tussle in the first set. The Prairie Wolves used an 11-2 rally to take an 18-11 lead then fought off eight straight points to win the opening set, 25-23. The Dutch took the second set, 25-18, before NWU won set three, 25-21. In the third set, Nebraska Wesleyan landed 12 kills. Central forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-11 victory in the fourth set.

Erica Hopping registered 56 assists, 10 kills, and four aces to lead the Prairie Wolves. All three numbers were career-best for Hopping at NWU. Hopping was one of three different players to record 10 kills for a balanced Nebraska Wesleyan offensive attack.

Defensively, Kennady Klein paced the Prairie Wolves with 21 digs. It was the fourth time Klein had at least 20 digs in a match. Nyah Chambers was credited with four block assists as Addie Thomas was credited with three block assists.
