AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Nebraska Wesleyan earned a 4-3 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in game two of a baseball doubleheader on Sunday (March 8) at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida to earn a split on the day. Wentworth won the first game 12-8 to earn their first win of the season.
The Prairie Wolves (5-3-1) broke open the 3-3 tie game with a run in the bottom of the 6
th inning then were able to close the game in the 7
th with a strikeout by
Josh Seifert who earned the victory.
With the game tied,
Riley Ward led off the inning with a single, moved to third on a double by
Will Schneidewind and scored the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by
John Haimowitz. Wentworth tried to tie the game in the top of the 7
th leading off with a single and getting the runner over to second. Seifert then got a flyout and strike out looking to end the game.
NWU opened the game with a run in the bottom of the 1
st as Ward doubled and scored on a double by Schneidewind. After Wentworth went ahead 2-1 in the 2
nd inning, NWU got back in control during the 4
th inning. Back-to-back doubles from
Kaleb Knox and Schneidewind got one run in, then Schneidewind scored on a wild pitch.
Schneidewind led the Prairie Wolves offense going 4-4 with three doubles and two RBI.
Riley Ward was 3-4 with two runs scored, while
Derek Kolbush and
Kaleb Knox each had two hits.
Noah Unger started on the mound going five innings allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts. Seifert pitched the final two innings allowing one earned run on two hits.
In game two, neither team scored in the opening inning, however Wentworth scored every inning the rest of the way to earn the 12-8 win. They finished with 10 hits and took advantage of four NWU errors.
Wentworth scored three runs in the 2
nd inning and four more in the 3
rd to lead 7-3. They were ahead by as many as 9-3 when NWU tried to rally with five runs in the final three innings but it wasn't enough.
Daniel Hundley started on the mound for NWU allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Drew Poulas pitched the final 2 2/3 innings giving up one earned run and five hits.
Aaron Nichols was 2-4 with a double and two RBI as one of three Prairie Wolves players that had two hits. Schneidewind was 2-4 and Kolbush went 2-2 with a pair of walks.
