ORLANDO, Fla. – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team got their spring trip to Florida off to a great start with a 5-4 walk-off victory over Clark University on Saturday (March 7) at Auburndale High School in Florida.
NWU (4-2-1) trailed 4-3 headed to the bottom of the 9th inning.
Aaron Nichols led off the inning with a double, followed by an RBI double from
Riley Ward to tie the game at 4-4. An intentional walk and stolen base put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and
Noah Unger at the plate. Unger came through in the clutch with the game-winning single to drive in Ward with the winning run.
Ward had a big day at the plate and on the mound for the Prairie Wolves. As the starting pitcher, Ward threw 5 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on six hits with two strikeouts. He was 2-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
Unger also had a two-hit day for the Prairie Wolves going 2-3 with two runs scored reaching base four times.
Clark (3-7) got the first run in the top of the 4th inning, then NWU tied it in the bottom of the inning as three walks loaded the bases and another walk to
Wyatt Stute brought in a run. In the 6th inning, Clark went ahead by one run but the Prairie Wolves responded in the bottom once again. Unger was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice then scored on an error.
In the 8th inning, the Cougars scored a pair of runs to take a 4-2 advantage. NWU was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 8th when Unger singles and would eventually score on a ground out by Stute.
Jackson Cummins pitched the final inning for NWU to get the victory.
NWU will play a doubleheader on March 8 against Wentworth Institute of Technology.
