Softball Opens Season 2-2 With Upset of #11 St. Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ROCHESTER, Minn. – Nebraska Wesleyan softball got their season off to a good start by finishing 2-2 on the weekend at the Rochester Dome Games on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 29-Mar. 1).  The Prairie Wolves dropped their first two games on Saturday, then came back two post two big wins on Sunday morning.
 
NWU upset #11 St. Thomas 5-3 on Sunday morning, scoring three runs in the top of 7th inning to take down the nationally-ranked team.  They finished the day with an 8-0 victory over Blackburn in six innings.
 
On Saturday, the Prairie Wolves opened the year with a 2-0 loss to Wisconsin-Platteville in the first game of the year.  NWU managed just one hit in the game against the Pioneers.
 
Game two saw the Prairie Wolves grab a lead over St. Catherine, only to allow six runs in the top of the 6th as they fell 6-3.  NWU scored two runs in the top of the 1st, then added another in the 3rd inning making it 3-0.  Elise Warneke went 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves offensive attack.
 
Facing the 11th-ranked team in the NCAA III softball poll, the Prairie Wolves trailed 3-0 after three innings.  Mollie Grant hit an RBI double in the 5th inning to get two runs in cutting the St. Thomas lead to 3-2.
 
Grant doubled again in the 6th inning to drive in Rachel Mundt with the tying run.  Two batters later, Emma Alfieri singled to drive in Sydney Nickerson with the go-ahead run.  Kailey Meyer followed up with another single to drive in Grant giving the Prairie Wolves the two run advantage.  Grant ended the game 2-3 with three RBI to lead the NWU offense.  Bailey Green was the winning pitcher going the final four innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
 
Against Blackburn, the Prairie Wolves led 4-0 after four innings then scored four more runs in the bottom of the 6th to end the game due to the run rule.
 
Emma Alfieri had the big offensive game for the Prairie Wolves against Blackburn going 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.  She had a three-run triple that was the biggest hit of the contest.  Grant went 2-3 with another double as the Prairie Wolves had five extra base hits.
 
Kailey Meyer got the complete game shutout victory on the mound going six innings allowing just three hits.
 
Nebraska Wesleyan now prepares for the Spring Trip to Florida where they will play 12 games.
