LINCOLN, Neb. – Senior guards
Caitlin Navratil and
Mikenzie Delgado combined to score 42 points to lead the Nebraska Wesleyan women to an 87-80 victory over College of Saint Mary on Wednesday night (Feb. 12) at Snyder Arena in Lincoln.
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves improve to 7-14 overall snapping their three game losing streak. The Flames fall to 2-18 overall on the season.
Nebraska Wesleyan led by as many as 21 points in the 3
rd quarter then had to withstand a fierce rally from CSM.
The Flames scored the first six points of the 4
th quarter to cut the double digit lead down to only four points at 73-69 with 8:10 left in the ball game. They got within three points after a 3-pointer with just over six minutes remaining.
From there, the Prairie Wolves used an 8-1 run over the next four minutes to build the lead back to ten points which would prove to be enough in the end. CSM did get back to within six points with 1:13 remaining however
Jazmine Glenn answered with a basket for the Prairie Wolves to make it a three possession game.
NWU came out firing on the offensive end to begin the game scoring 34 points in the first quarter, hitting 52.4 percent as a team. That 18 point lead proved to be a big enough cushion the rest of the way as the Flames outscored NWU in each of the next three quarters.
For the game the Prairie Wolves shot 46.3 percent, making 7-22 from 3-point land.
College of Saint Mary was able to stay close with their outside shooting. The Flames hit 14 3-pointers on the game, shooting 43.8% as a team. Trista Merrival was the big threat from deep hitting five 3-pointers to score a team-high 19 points.
Caitlin Navratil led all scorers with 24 points, making 9-12 at the free throw line. Navratil added five assists and five rebounds in the game.
Backcourt mate Mikeznie Delgado hit 4-7 from deep to score 18 points. Delgado had 10 of her points in the first quarter alone.
Two other NWU players reached double figures with
Sami Tucker getting 14 points and team-high nine rebounds while Paige Ravenscraft had 10 points with two 3-pointers.
NWU is back at home on Saturday (Feb. 15) when they return to American Rivers action hosting Central College.
