LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan saw their baseball season come to a close on Saturday (May 4) dropping a pair of games to Central College in the final American Rivers Conference series of the year at NWU Field. The Dutch defeated the Prairie Wolves 12-5 in game one, then took the second game 13-1 in seven innings.
NWU ends their season at 10-25 overall and 8-15 in A-R-C play to finish 8
th in the league standings, missing out on the 6-team postseason tournament. By winning the first game on Saturday, Central clinched a spot in the tournament and ends up being the No. 5 seed for next week's tournament.
Things looked good for the Prairie Wolves early in the day as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2
nd inning.
Brook Johnson belted a 2-run double to the gap in right field driving in
Kaleb Knox and
Jackson Cummins.
That 2-0 lead didn't last long with Central coming back to score three runs in the top of the 3
rd inning. They added another run in the 4
th and scored four runs in the 5
th inning making the score 8-2.
NWU didn't quit and started their comeback in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded,
Derek Kolbush drilled a double to the center field wall clearing the bases and making the score 8-5. In the 6
th inning, the first two NWU batters reached base but the Prairie Wolves were unable to advance them and that killed the momentum.
Central scored two runs in the 8
th and 9
th inning to extend their lead and seal the win. NWU finished the game with only five hits, compared to 13 for the Dutch. Central relief pitcher Ryan Riddle got the three inning save allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
Connor Cech took the loss on the mound in his final career start in an NWU uniform. Cech allowed four earned runs and six hits in four innings. Kolbush and Johnson each had two hits to lead the NWU offense.
Game two was dominated by the Dutch as they were ahead 7-0 after two innings and easily won 13-1 in seven innings.
The Prairie Wolves got only four hits in the game and their only run was scored on a solo home run by
Kaleb Knox.
Tucker McHugh recorded the final out on the mound for the Prairie Wolves and with his appearance he set a new school record for single season appearances with 17.
