WAVERLY, Iowa –
Riley Ward allowed just one run in seven innings of work and drove in two runs at the plate to lead Nebraska Wesleyan to a 4-1 victory at Wartburg College in game two of an American Rivers Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (April 13) in Waverly, Iowa. Wartburg took the opening game 7-4. The two teams play game three of the series on Sunday at Noon.
NWU scored three runs in the top of the 4
th inning and that was all that Ward would need as the Prairie Wolves got their second win in the past three games.
The Prairie Wolves took advantage of three walks and a hit batter in the inning, including bases loaded walks to
Aaron Nichols and
Brook Johnson. Ward singled up the middle to drive in
Daniel Hundley with the final run of the inning.
In the top of the 6
th inning the Prairie Wolves added an insurance runs as
Kaleb Knox singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ward.
On the mound, Ward got his second straight victory throwing seven innings allowing one run on nine hits. He struck out two and walked three.
Josh Seifert pitched the final two scoreless innings to record his second save of the year.
Knox and
Will Watkins both had two hits for the Prairie Wolves in game two to lead the team at the plate.
In the opener, Wartburg jumped ahead 7-1 after four innings and the Prairie Wolves were unable to recover. The Knights finished with 12 total hits.
Connor Cech took the loss on the mound for the Prairie Wolves giving up seven runs in four innings.
Tucker McHugh pitched the final four innings allowing only one hit and no runs.
NWU tried to mount a late rally as they got a solo home run from
Tyler Winterstein in the 4
th inning for the first run of the game.
Derek Kolbush had an RBI single in the 5
th inning, then Ward drove in a run with a groundout in the 6
th. The final run came in the 8
th inning when
Spencer Scheer singled and scored on a two errors making the score 7-4. That is as close as NWU would get.
