WAVERLY, Iowa – In game three of a key series between teams battling for position in the American Rivers Conference baseball standings, the Nebraska Wesleyan bats went quiet as Wartburg shutout the Prairie Wolves 6-0 on Sunday (April 14) in Waverly, Iowa.
Wartburg takes the series 2-1 and moves ahead of the Prairie Wolves in the A-R-C standings. The Knights are now 8-20 overall and 5-10 in league play after entering the weekend on an 8-game losing streak. NWU falls to 6-18 and 4-8 in the conference to remain at the bottom of the standings.
Darren Kilpatrick threw a complete game four-hit shutout for the Knighs. Kilpatrick pitched all nine innings allowing no runs and striking out five.
Wartburg scored a run in the 1
st inning then added another in the 3
rd. The Knights plated two runs in the 7
th and sealed the victory with a pair of runs in the 7
th.
Sam Condello started on the mound for NWU allowing five hits and two runs in 4.0 innings of work.
Hayden Parker pitched 2.0 innings giving up two runs on only one hit with three walks and
Tucker McHugh pitched the final two innings allowing two runs and three hits.
NWU had two runners on base in the 1
st inning with only one out but couldn't get the big hit. Kilpatrick then retired 17 straight batters as NWU didn't have a base runner again until the 7
th when
Tyler Winterstein doubled.
Spencer Scheer hit a bunt single putting two runners on base, but the threat was ended with a pair of strikeouts. Only one additional NWU runner reached base the rest of the way.
The Prairie Wolves are back at home on Tuesday to host Buena Vista for one 9-inning game.
