TUCSON, Ariz. – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team picked up their first win of the season with a 15-5 victory over Wesleyan (Conn.) on Friday afternoon.
NWU pounded out 18 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs to earn the victory moving to 1-8 on the year.
The Prairie Wolves jumped ahead 4-0 in the top of the 1
st inning.
Riley Ward, Even Gellatly and
Kaleb Knox each had RBI singles in the inning. Wesleyan cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the 1
st inning.
NWU extended the lead to 5-2 in the 3
rd inning on a sacrifice fly from Knox. They went up 7-2 with two more runs in the 5
th inning.
Aaron Nichols hit a 2-run double for the big hit of inning.
In the top of the 7
th inning the Prairie Wolves put the game out of reach by scoring four additional runs. A three-run double by
Derek Kolbush was the big hit of the inning as NWU scored four runs on only two hits.
NWU scored four runs in the 9
th inning as well, using RBI singles by
Tyler Winterstein,
Will Watkins and Ward. Kolbush drove in the other run with another double.
Kolbush had a huge day at the plate to lead the Prairie Wolves offense. He was 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
Aaron Nichols and
Evan Gellatly also each had three hits on the day. Nichols was 3-4 with a double and two RBI, while Gellatly was 3-6 with an RBI and a run scored.
Drew Poulas was the starting pitcher for the Prairie Wolves going 4 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits.
Josh Seifert got the victory pitching the final 4 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs. Seifert struck out two and walked three while scattering seven hits.
Wesleyan dropped to 1-4 overall as they committed five errors on the day.
