TUCSON, Ariz. – For a second straight day on their spring trip in Arizona the Prairie Wolves baseball team came away victorious as Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Augsburg 14-9 on Saturday afternoon (March 16).
The Prairie Wolves took advantage of seven Augsburg errors and pounded out 12 hits in the game. It was the first game of the season for Augsburg, but they still managed to get 18 hits on the day.
NWU scored runs in each of the first three innings of the game to build up an early 6-3 lead. Augsburg came roaring back and regained the lead at 7-6, then NWU outscored the Auggies 8-2 over the final four innings to secure the second win of the year.
Derek Kolbush continued his hot hitting with an RBI single in the 1
st inning to drive in the first run of the contest for NWU. They put up three runs in the 2
nd inning, taking advantage of a big outfield error by Augsburg and getting an RBI single from pitcher
Riley Ward.
Will Watkins got an RBI double in the third inning to get the scoring started.
Brook Johnson brought in Watkins later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Augsburg scored three runs on three hits in the 5
th inning to pull ahead of NWU at 7-6.
In the bottom of the 5
th, NWU came right back to score four runs and retake the lead. Ward had a 2-run single for the big hit of the inning, while
Kaleb Knox and
Zach Plummer each hit RBI singles. They extended the lead to five runs with two more in the 6
th inning. Drew Nichols hit an RBI single and the Prairie Wolves took advantage of another costly Auggie error.
The final runs of the game for NWU were scored in the 8
th inning as
Bradyn Thomas hit an RBI double and Ward got a sac fly to drive in Thomas.
All nine batters in the Prairie Wolves lineup had a hit with Ward and Knox each getting two hits. Ward was 2-5 with a team-high four RBI. Knox went 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Ward also got the win on the mound pitching 6 innings allowing two earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts.
Sam Condello recorded the save pitching the final three innings allowing six hits and two runs.
