LINCOLN, Neb. –
Carsyn Zumpfe buried a baseline jump shot with 1.3 seconds left in overtime to give Nebraska Wesleyan an 82-80 victory over Simpson College in American Rivers women's basketball action on Wednesday night (Feb. 6) at Snyder Arena.
It marks the third straight victory for the Prairie Wolves and the third straight time that NWU has won a game in the final seconds as they improve to 12-10 overall and 7-6 in conference play. The Prairie Wolves fell to Simpson by 30 points in the first meeting, but were able to take them down on their own court.
Nebraska Wesleyan had a chance to win the game in regulation with the game tied at 73-73.
Caitlin Navratil missed a 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining but the Prairie Wolves pulled down the offensive rebound. They set up a play with
Klaire Phillips driving to the basket, but here layup fell off.
Once again the Prairie Wolves got the offensive rebound giving them one more chance. Navratil took a shot with 16 seconds left that was just off, though Phillips got the third straight offensive board. With three seconds left, Navratil's try at a game-winner fell off the rim sending it to overtime.
The lead changed four times in overtime with NWU regaining the lead on a pair of free throws by Phillips with 43 seconds left. Jenna Taylor buried a 3-pointer for Simpson with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 80.
NWU held for the final shot and
Mikenzie Delgado drove into the lane then passed inside to
Sydney Skupa who found Zumpfe open for the jumper as the shot clock expired. Simpson took a timeout to advance the ball to halfcourt with 1.3 seconds left. Taylor got a 3-pointer off, but it was short giving the Prairie Wolves the win.
NWU ended the game shooting 34.1 percent overall, compared to 47.6 percent for Simpson. The Prairie Wolves were led by
Caitlin Navratil who scored 24 points making 6-13 from long range.
Klaire Phillips scored 18 points with eight rebounds and
Sydney Skupa came off the bench to score 10.
Jenna Taylor led Simpson with 24 points, while Cassie Chubb scored 21.
