DUBUQUE, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan stayed on top of the American Rivers Conference standings on Saturday (Dec. 7) when the Prairie Wolves women went on the road to defeat University of Dubuque 95-85 in A-R-C basketball action.
NWU (5-4, 2-0) scored 33 first half points to get ahead by ten points early. The Spartans (3-3, 0-2) responded with a 30-point second quarter outscoring NWU by ten points to make the score 53-53 at halftime.
Neither team was able to extend the lead by more than five points throughout the third quarter. To start the 4
th quarter, the Prairie Wolves opened the period on a 10-0 run holding the Spartans scoreless the first 3:30 of the quarter. NWU got up by 14 points and they would be able to maintain the lead the rest of the way.
Once again the NWU full court pressure defense bothered the opponent forcing the Spartans into 28 turnovers. The two teams combined to shoot 56 free throws in a game that had 49 fouls.
The Prairie Wolves shot 47.4 percent from the field for the game, opening the contest making 14-25 in the first quarter. NWU was only 14-28 at the free throw line. Dubuque wasn't much better hitting 16-28 at the free throw line. The Spartans struggled shooting from deep making only 3-16 on their 3-point attempts.
Caitlin Navratil had another huge game to lead the Prairie Wolves. Navratil scored 34 points on 15-26 shooting playing 38 minutes. Navratil had a team-high seven steals, pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists.
McKenzie Teten came off the bench to score 16 points, thanks to 9-12 shooting at the free throw line.
Jazmine Glenn scored 11 points with five assists and
Sydney Skupa ended with 10 points off the bench.
Five players scored in double figures for Dubuque with two Spartans finishing with double-doubles. The Spartans held a 54-42 advantage in rebounding. Tabria Thomas had 15 points and 11 rebounds, with Miah Smith getting 13 points and 15 rebounds.
