LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan wrestling team made their home debut on Wednesday night (Nov. 6) with an impressive 38-13 dual victory over Fontbonne University from St. Louis, Mo. NWU won seven of the ten duals to start the season with a 1-0 record.
Eron Haynes (133),
Brayden Dowding (149) and
Justin Hennessy (285) all recorded falls for the Prairie Wolves. Haynes was coming off a 1st place finish at the Yellow Jacket Open earning conference wrestler of the week honors. For Dowding and Hennessy, it was their season debut on the mat.
After sitting out last season with injury,
Nathan Hunt made a triumphant return getting a 21-2 tech fall win at 165. The other win on the night by NWU came at 184 where
Anthony Stege posted a 5-2 decision victory.
Zeth Gerkensmeyer (157) and
Alex Kerr (197) both won by forfeit as the Griffins were open.
Fontbonne, in their first season of wrestling, won by fall at 125, got a major decision at 174 and won by decision at 141.
NWU opens conference play on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) when they host Wartburg College in an American Rivers Conference dual at Snyder Arena.
