CLAREMONT, Calif. – Nebraska Wesleyan started their trip to California on a good note by building a seven-point halftime lead, however Claremont-Mudd-Scripps completely turned things around in the second half outscoring NWU by 45 points on their way to a 104-70 victory on Friday night (Nov. 29)
NWU (3-3) led 44-37 at halftime and looked to be in good shape to start their weekend with a win.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-0) remained undefeated on the year by putting together one of the most complete quarters a team could play in the 3
rd quarter. CMS outscored NWU 37-12 in the 3
rd quarter, shooting 65.2 percent from the floor, making 3-4 from 3-point land and 4-5 at the free throw line. NWU was just 5-15 from the floor.
CMS tied the game at 52-52 with just over five minutes left in the 3
rd period. From there, the Prairie Wolves were held to only four points while CMS scored 22 the final five minutes of the period. They led 74-56 after three quarters then added on in the fourth,
In the fourth quarter, it was more of the same as CMS scored 30 points compared to only 14 by the Prairie Wolves. NWU shot only 5-16 from the field scoring 26 total points in the 2
nd half. CMS hit 42.9 percent from the field in the 4
th quarter to complete a 67 point second half.
The biggest stat difference on the final box score was in rebounding. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pulled down 67 total rebounds in the game, with NWU getting just 19. CMS had 31 offensive rebounds, scoring 31 second chance points. NWU had only two second chance points and was outscored 58-32 in the paint.
NWU made five 3-pointers in the opening half, then went 0-4 in the second half. CMS didn't make a 3-pointer in the first 20 minutes, then did the opposite of NWU and hit five in the second half.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished the game with 104 points, the first time they have scored over 66 in a game this season.
McKenzie Teten came off the bench to lead the Prairie Wolves with 13 points, going 4-9 from the field and 4-4 at the free throw line.
Caitlin Navratil scored 12 points and
Mikenzie Delgado added 11 as three NWU players reached double figures.
Kate Parrish had a huge night for CMS with 27 points and 22 rebounds in only 22 minutes of action. She was 7-10 from the floor, 13-13 at the free throw line and had 14 offensive rebounds. Parrish had three more rebounds than the entire NWU team. Also recording a double-double was Lindsey Cleary with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
NWU will complete their trip on Saturday playing at Pomona-Pitzer.
