LINCOLN, Neb. – Six runs in the bottom of the 8
th inning capped the biggest comeback of the season as the Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team rallied back for a 11-10 victory over Buena Vista University on Tuesday afternoon (April 10) at NWU Field in Lincoln.
Tyler Winterstein hit a 2-run single to tie the game in the 8
th inning then came around to score the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch. One week ago, the Prairie Wolves lost to BVU on a wild pitch as NWU turned the tables on the Beavers.
Four straight hits in the 8
th allowed NWU to make up a five run deficit that they were facing heading into the 6
th.
Cole Schumacher doubled down the left field line then scored on a single by
Jared Scdoris.
Riley Ward doubled to put two runners on base.
Justus Stocks got a single for his third hit of the day to drive in Scdoris.
Spencer Scheer completed the four hit parade with a single to left field to bring in Ward.
With two outs and the tying run on second base, Winterstein came up with the clutch hit to tie the game then moved to second base on the throw. He advanced to third on a passed ball then eventually scored on the wild pitch.
Tucker McHugh came in to pitch the 9
th inning and struck out the first two batters before getting a ground out to the pitcher to earn his second save of the year.
Buena Vista built up a 7-0 lead after just two innings with eight hits in their first two at-bats off NWU starter
Brody Murphy.
NWU did not fold early as they answered back with five runs in the bottom of the 2
nd, scoring five unearned runs.
Derek Kolbush delivered the big hit with a two-run single, while Ward and Stocks also had RBI singles.
The Prairie Wolves only scored in two innings in the game, plating five in the 2
nd and then six more in the 8
th.
After NWU cut the BVU lead to 7-5, the Prairie Wolves bats went quiet and the Beavers kept adding on runs. They scored one in the 4
th and two more in the 6
th.
Nebraska Wesleyan, which has now won three of their last four games, ended with 15 total hits. Winterstein was 3-5 with a double and two RBI. Stocks also was 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Scheer, Kolbush, Ward and
Cole Schumacher each had two hit performances.
Five different pitchers were used in the game for NWU.
Connor Cech ended up getting the win pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing just one hit.
NWU is next scheduled for a three-game series at Loras College this weekend.
