LINCOLN, Neb. – Loras College pitchers held the Nebraska Wesleyan batters in check, including 14 total strikeouts as the Duhawks took two games from the Prairie Wolves in Iowa Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln. Loras won game one 3-0, then won the second game 18-3 in a series that was moved from Dubuque, Iowa to Lincoln because of the forecast.
It was a pitchers dual in the opener between NWU's
Jesse Maguire and Brad Schwind of Loras. Maguire went all eight innings for the Prairie Wolves allowing seven hits and two earned runs, but the Schwind threw seven scoreless innings to setup closer Aidan Wojciehowski to throw the final two scoreless innings.
NWU had their chances in the first contest, but just couldn't come up with the key hit with runners in scoring position. Loras scored one run in the 3
rd, added another run in the 7
th and got one more insurance run in the 8
th.
Both teams finished with seven hits and NWU had two extra base hits compared to all singles for the Duhawks but NWU left nine runners stranded on base.
NWU had their chances in the 7
th and 8
th innings with two runners in each situation, however the Duhawk pitchers were able to escape danger and record the key out.
Schwind moved to 6-0 on the season for Loras striking out six batters in seven innings. Wojciehowski struck out three in the final two innings to record his third save and keep his ERA below 0.40.
Game two was not nearly as competitive as Loras pounded out 16 hits and 18 runs to defeat the Prairie Wolves by 15 and end the game in seven innings due to the run rule.
The Duhawks scored two runs in the 1
st, added two more in the 2
nd and plated four in the 3
rd to take an early 8-1 lead. NWU cut the lead to 8-3 in the top of the 4
th inning and had a chance for a big inning but an interference call on a double play ended the threat and halted any momentum.
Hayden Parker took the loss on the mound for the Prairie Wolves giving up six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Tyler Winterstein was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a double to lead the Prairie Wolves offense. His double was the 11
