LINCOLN, Neb. – Loras College shot 65.4 percent from the field in the first half and ended the game at 55.8 percent as the Duhawks defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 74-58, in Iowa Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night (Feb. 7) at Snyder Arena.
NWU drops its third straight game to fall to 13-10 overall and 4-10 in IIAC play while the Duhawks avenge an earlier loss to the Prairie Wolves to move to 14-8 and 6-7 in IIAC action.
The Prairie Wolves trailed by just four points after one quarter, 23-19, but for the second straight home game the Prairie Wolves struggled shooting in the second quarter. NWU made just 3-16 from the field in the second quarter, while Loras was 6-12 to build up a 39-30 advantage at the break. Nebraska Wesleyan went the final 5:44 of the first half without a field goal.
Loras would get up by as many as 13 points in the third quarter and led 59-47 after three. A basket by NWU on the opening possession of the fourth quarter made it a 10-point game but that was as close as the Prairie Wolves could get.
NWU never got on track shooting the basketball, especially from 3-point range. The Prairie Wolves were 5-26 on 3-pointers and ended the game at 33.9 percent overall. Loras wasn't any better from deep hitting only 2-16 on 3-pointers ,but the Duhawks outscored the Prairie Wolves 44-22 in the paint.
Two Prairie Wolves reached double figures in scoring led by
Klaire Phillips who got the start to replace the injured
Ann Schulte. Phillips was 4-8 from the field and 5-6 at the free throw line.
Caitlin Navratil also scored in double figures with 12 points, but was only 5-14 from the field.
Addie Oberman led Loras with 22 points on 8-11 shooting. Cyerra Hutchins came off the bench to post a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.
