LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to a huge 32-point halftime lead and rolled to a 77-53 victory over University of Dubuque in American Rivers women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Stoltz Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
NWU wins its third straight game to improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play to sit atop the league standings. Dubuque drops their fifth straight game to fall to 1-5 overall.
It was the full court pressure of the Prairie Wolves that caused the Spartans fits all day long. NWU forced Dubuque into 33 turnovers in the game, recording 21 total steals.
The Prairie Wolves led 24-10 at the end of the 1
st quarter, holding the Spartans to just 25 percent shooting. Dubuque was only 6-28 shooting in the entire first half and ended the game at 33.3 percent shooting. The Spartans outscored the Prairie Wolves by eight points in the second half, but they had too big of a deficit to overcome.
Mikenzie Delgado was the start of the game for the Prairie Wolves scoring a career-high 20 points, making 4-8 from 3-point range.
Caitlin Navratil also had a big game for Nebraska Wesleyan scoring 16 points with a team-high eight rebounds and a team-high seven steals. Delgado and Navratil were the only two Prairie Wolves to score in double figures.
As a team, the Prairie Wolves finished the game shooting 38.5 percent from the floor, hitting 8-30 from 3-point range for 26.7 percent. Dubuque held a + 3 advantage on the glass, but it was the turnovers that ultimately hurt the Spartans.
Dubuque did not have a single player score in double figures as they were led by Kia Dwight with eight points.
