LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan won the opening set and looked prime to have a joyous senior night, but Coe College had other plans as the Kohawks rallied back to take down the Prairie Wolves 3-1 in American Rivers Conference volleyball action on Saturday night (Oct. 20) at Snyder Arena. Coe won the match in scores of 15-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22.
With the loss, the Prairie Wolves are officially eliminated from a chance a qualifying for the American Rivers Postseason Tournament for the first time in their three years in the league. NWU drops to 7-14 overall and 1-6 in conference play. Coe moves to 16-9 and 4-3 in league play.
Nebraska Wesleyan came out firing in the opening set and rolled to a 25-15 victory. The Prairie Wolves led 10-9 then ran off seven of the next eight points to build up a 17-10 lead so they could cruise the rest of the way.
In set two, the match was tied eight times with two lead changes. The last tie was at 9-9 as Coe went up 12-9 and never let NWU get close again. The Prairie Wolves pulled to within 18-16, but Coe outscored the Wolves 7-3 the rest of the way.
Coe College was dominant in the third set as they never trailed the entire set winning 25-19.
The fourth set was by far the most competitive and came down to the final points. A double block from
Cora Svoboda and
Anna Gottsch gave the Prairie Wolves a 22-20 advantage, but Coe then scored five straight points including three kills from Lindsey Koch to earn the win.
NWU hit .188 as a team with 47 kills, compared to 63 kills for the Kohawks.
Kierra Harder had a team-high 17 kills in her final appearance at Snyder Arena. Harder posted another double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs.
Gottsch dished out 39 assists with 16 digs for a double-double.
For Coe, Lindsey Koch had 20 kills and 14 digs to lead the way.
Nebraska Wesleyan has one week remaining as they close out conference play on Tuesday at Central College then play at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.
