LINCOLN, Neb. – Playing only their third home match of the season, the Nebraska Wesleyan volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Luther College on Friday night (Oct. 19) in American Rivers Conference action at Snyder Arena. The Norse defeated the Prairie Wolves in scores of 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22.
NWU falls to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play with Luther moving to 13-14 and 4-2. The Prairie Wolves now play their final home match of the season on Saturday (Oct. 20). With their loss and a Loras win on Friday, the Prairie Wolves need to win on Saturday to keep their postseason chances alive.
Luther led early in the first set before NWU rallied to take a 13-12 advantage. Three straight points by the Norse put them ahead and NWU never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
In the second set, NWU led only once at 1-0 with Luther taking control the rest of the way. The Prairie Wolves pulled within one point at 11-10, then the Norse reeled off five of the next six points and got a lead that was too much to overcome.
NWU did not give up as the Prairie Wolves played a very strong third set. Luther led early until NWU got their first lead at 8-7. They would not relinquish that advantage the rest of the set. Luther did score four straight points on set point, then
Karrie Sestak finally sealed the win with a big kill to send it to a fourth set.
Set four was tied seven different times as the two teams were dead even to start. NWU actually led by three points early but their last lead was at 8-7. With the math tied at 12-12, the Norse scored three straight points and NWU couldn't get back within one until the end. A service ace from
Callie Kohl pulled the Prairie Wolves within a point at 23-22 forcing a timeout. Luther recorded a kill then an NWU error ended the threat at 25-22.
The Prairie Wolves had 52 total kills with a team hitting percentage of .195. Three different players reached double figures in kills and two players posted double-doubles.
Kierra Harder had a team-high 11 kills with 15 digs.
Taylor Stout and
Cora Svoboda both had 10 kills.
Anna Gottsch posted a double-double of 47 assists and 10 digs with
Lizzie Saale recording a team-high 30 digs.
Luther was led by Karissa Kime who had 21 kills in the match.
