LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball team didn't back down and held their own but in the end the 2
nd-ranked Wartburg Knights were too much for the Prairie Wolves as they defeated NWU 93-72 in IIAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night (Jan. 17) at Snyder Arena.
Wartburg remains undefeated on the year at 17-0 overall and 8-0 in IIAC play while NWU falls to 11-6 and 2-6 in IIAC action.
The Knights shot well over 50 percent in the first half and built up a 50-33 lead at the break. The Prairie Wolves were outscored by just four points in the second half and held a 19-17 advantage in the 4
th quarter.
Wartburg led by as many as 25 points in the second half, but NWU made on late charge and cut the lead down to 16 points on a 3-pointer from
Caitlin Navratil with 6:31 remaining. The Knights responded with a 3-pointer of their own to end any major threat by NWU.
It was another solid shooting performance by the Knights as they made 54.4 percent from the field and hit 10-24 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, NWU struggled from the floor hitting only 38.6 percent.
Sophomore
Caitlin Navratil had another big outing scoring a game-high 28 points. Navratil was 10-17 from the floor and 3-4 on 3-point attempts to go along with four steals. She was the only NWU player to reach double figures in scoring.
The Knights had a balanced attack with four players in double digits. Katie Sommer scored 22 points with seven assists. Morgan Neuendorf and Kristie Sommer each had 15 points.
