2nd Quarter Run Dooms NWU Women at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Buena Vista went on a 24-4 run to end the 1st half and continued to build on that lead to start the second half as the Beavers completed the season sweep over Nebraska Wesleyan with a 83-67 victory in Iowa Conference women's basketball action Monday night (Jan. 30) in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Nebraska Wesleyan (9-10, 3-8 IIAC) jumped out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter.  They extended the lead to 24-14 with 8:13 to play before the break.  From that point on, the Prairie Wolves made only two more field goals as BVU built up a 38-28 lead.

The Beavers (11-9, 7-4 IIAC) kept the pressure on to start the second half opening the 3rd quarter on a 12-2 run to get up by 20 points as just over three minutes were played in the period.  That was too big of a deficit to overcome for the Prairie Wolves.  BVU got up by as many as 28 points in the 4th quarter before the Prairie Wolves reserve players chipped the lead down in the final minutes.

Buena Vista had an impressive shooting performance making over 50 percent for the game.  The Beavers were 29-57 from the field, made 9-23 from 3-point range and shot 16-20 at the free throw line.  BVU also held a +9 advantage in rebounding.

For the second straight game, the Prairie Wolves struggled shooting in the 2nd quarter.  NWU made just 5-15 from the floor in the second quarter, going 0-4 from 3-point land.  They finished the game at 38.3 percent as a team shooting.

Caitlin Navratil had another huge game as one bright spot for the Prairie Wolves in the loss.  Navratil scored a team-high 24 points making 10-14 from the field.  She was the only NWU player to score in double figures.

Mikenzie Delgado got just her second start of the year and responded with three 3-pointers for nine points as the second leading scorer.

Jasmine Demers led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds for the Beavers.

NWU will now return to Snyder Arena for three straight home games starting on Wednesday night versus Central College.
