STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Nebraska Wesleyan women's tennis team will forever be known as the first team in school history to record a victory as a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. NWU defeated Buena Vista University, 5-4, on Saturday (Sept. 3) in Storm Lake, Iowa.
NWU lost their initial match of the day, 9-0, to the University of Dubuque in a match that was also played in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Despite playing with just five players and automatically giving up two team points, the Prairie Wolves were able to edge just past BVU.
Nebraska Wesleyan won both of their doubles matches against the Beavers.
Bridget McKeegan and
Torey Kogel won 9-8 over Lannie Brown and Tarynne Kinghorn in a very competitive No. 1 doubles clash.
Jaime Bridges and
Madi Hinshaw were 8-2 winners at No. 2 doubles.
In the singles matches, NWU came away with three wins to seal the team victory. McKeegan won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to lead the way. Hinshaw was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at the No. 3 spot and Bridges needed three sets to win 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 at No. 4 singles.
The 2016-17 season is a change for the Prairie Wolves women's tennis team as conference dual matches take place during the fall season, compared to the spring dual competition that took place in the GPAC. The Iowa Conference postseason tournament that determines a trip to the NCAA III Postseason Tournament is still held during the spring season.
