Box Score CRETE, Neb. --
Cooper Cook made the game-winning layup with 5.1 seconds remaining to put Nebraska Wesleyan ahead and Doane didn't get a shot off as the Prairie Wolves defeated the Tigers 95-93 in the final GPAC meeting between the old rivals.
It was a flurry of action in the final 30 seconds as the rivalry added another chapter in the historic series. For the second time this season, Doane had a chance to win the game at regulation but they did not convert either time.
After Cook's layup with 5.1 seconds remaining, a NWU player tipped the inbound pass to give Doane the ball at midcourt with 4.5 seconds left. The Tigers got the ball to their top scorer Deonte Holt who drove the lane but lost control of the ball and didn't get a shot off as time expired.
Doane led 87-86 with just over one minute remaining.Â
Travis Giesselmann muscled his way to the basket to give NWU a one point lead with exactly 1:00 left. The Tigers quickly came down the court and got a layup by Trevor Cyboron with 41 seconds left. NWU attacked the basket and
Trey Bardsley was fouled to give him two shots. He sank both free throws to put the Prairie Wolves up 90-89 with 36.5 seconds left.
The Tigers would take the lead again on another big basket by Cyboron with 26.5 left. Bardsley quickly took the inbounds pass and drove down the court where he pulled up for a 3-pointer that he drained with 21 seconds left. Cyboron tied the game again at 93-93 with nine seconds left.Â
Bardsley once again brought the ball down quickly and dished off to Cook who was wide open to hit the game-winner.
Things didn't look great for the Prairie Wolves as they trailed by as many as nine points in the 2nd half. NWU slowly chipped away and got 15 second half points from
Travis Giesselmann and two big 3-pointers from
Max Cook to climb back in it.
NWU shot 50.7 percent from the field, hitting 12-33 from 3-point land. Five players reached double figures for the Prairie Wolves.
Travis Giesselmann had his ninth double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds to go along with his five assists.Â
Keithan Karn scored 20 points, 18 of which came in the first half.
Trey Bardsley ended with 16 points, but shot just 6-18 from the floor and 2-9 from 3-point land.Â
Max Cook scored his career-high with 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers.
Doane was led by Deonte Holt with 23 points and eight rebounds. The Tigers shot 52.1 percent from the floor.
NWU has now won six straight games to improve to 19-6 overall, their highest win total since the 1998-99 season. The Prairie Wolves are 14-5 in GPAC play to remain in 2nd place in the GPAC standings with one game remaining. NWU finishes the season at Mount Marty College on Saturday.
