Women Drop a Pair of Home Matches

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan women's tennis team dropped a pair of home duals on Saturday as they fell to William Jewell College and Baker University in matches played at Knight Fieldhouse.  NWU lost to William Jewell 8-1 in the morning then closed the day with a 6-3 setback to Baker.

In the morning match against NCAA Division II William Jewell, the Prairie Wolves only victory came at No. 1 singles.  Katherine Ternent picked up the win over Lauren Huddleston who was forced to retire from the match.  The Cardinals won the the other singles matches in straight sets.

Doubles action was competitive, especially at No. 1 doubles.  Ternent joined Natalie Cech for NWU at the No. 1 spot and battled hard in a 9-7 setback to the WJC tandem of Huddleston and Savannah Drew.

In the afternoon match against Baker, a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, the Prairie Wolves opened the match with a win in doubles play.  Ternent and Cech defeated Brooke Barnard/Megan Henry by a score of 8-6 at No. 1 doubles to get the day started.  Baker was able to win the other two doubles matches, taking No. 2 8-4 and No. 3 with a score of 8-6.

Ternent picked up another singles win at No. 1 as she defeated Barnard, 6-2, 6-3 for the straight set victory.  Also getting a victory in singles action was Natalie Cech at No. 2 singles.  Cech won her match with ease in scores of 6-1, 6-0.  The Wildcats won the other four singles matches to earn the dual victory.

The most competitive match of the day was at No. 6 singles where Taylor Swartzendruber of Baker had to rally back to defeat Tori Van De Veer, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5.
