FREMONT, Neb. --
Addie Wetzel made the game-winning free throw with 3.7 seconds left and Midland missed the potential game winner at the buzzer as Nebraska Wesleyan held on for a 70-69 win in GPAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night (Jan. 27) in Fremont.
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves snap their 12-game losing streak as they pick up the first win since defeating Midland on Nov. 24. It marks the first time in series history that NWU completes the season sweep over the Warriors and just the 12th win all-time over Midland in a series with over 80 games.
NWU is now 4-14 overall and 3-12 in conference play giving them the most GPAC wins in five years.
It was a wild finish for the Prairie Wolves as they secured the first win since November.Â
Addie Wetzel tied the game for NWU at 69-69 with 1:50 to play and that was the last field goal for either team.
Midland missed a 3-pointer on their end of the floor, but NWU committed a turnover when they got the ball back on a pick and roll play. The Warriors attempted another 3-pointer the next time down that was not good and NWU had a run out attempt at the other end.Â
Alli Kalal snuck behind the defense and had a fast break layup that would not go in.
The Warrior had the ball with just under 30 seconds left. Newcomer
Ann Schulte got a big steal for the Prairie Wolves with 15 seconds left to give NWU the ball. After two quick fouls by Midland, the Prairie Wolves got the ball in the post to Wetzel who was fouled on the shot attempt. She missed her first free throw, but canned the second attempt to put NWU up by one point.
Midland had one final chance as they got to inbounds the ball at midcourt. The Warriors sent a looping pass into the paint to leading scorer Joelle Overcamp but her shot was not good as the buzzer sounded.
Wetzel led the Prairie Wolves with a season-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds. She was 6-12 from the floor and 8-9 at the free throw line. Joining Wetzel in double figures was
Felicia TeKolste. TeKolste was also 6-12 from the floor to score 16 points with four rebounds and three steals.
Coming off the bench,
Ann Schulte finished the game with seven points, six assists and four steals as she filled the stat sheet in 26 minutes of action.
NWU 43.1 percent from the floor and went 14-18 at the free throw line. Midland was held to 32.8 percent from the floor, but did connect on 11 3-pointers.
Miranda Paul made six 3-pointes and scored 20 points to lead Midland.
