LINCOLN, Neb. -- 4th-ranked Midland University proved why they are one of the top teams in the NAIA as they came into Snyder Arena and defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 3-0, in GPAC volleyball action on Friday night. The Warriors won the match in scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.
Midland remains undefeated on the season as they move to 17-0 and 4-0 in GPAC play, while the Prairie Wolves fall to 4-8 and 0-4 in GPAC.
Nebraska Wesleyan tried to hang with the tough Warriors and had a productive first set. The Prairie Wolves hit .343 as a team in the opening set with 16 kills to account for nearly all the team's points. Midland was outstanding hitting .552 with 17 kills and just one error in the first set.
Set two was tied at 9-9 with both teams exchanging points back and forth. The Warriors led 12-11 and then went on a big run. Midland outscored NWU 8-1 to get up 20-12 and they would never look back.
Nebraska Wesleyan did not back down from Midland in the final set despite being down 20-11 at one point. NWU dug down deep and rattled off nine of the next ten points to make the score 21-20. The Warriors were forced to take two timeouts in the run as NWU got five kills, and an ace by
Kelsey Bahe got NWU within one.
A Midland kill ended the run and NWU could manage just one more point as the Warriors went on to earn the 25-21 victory.
Freshman
Kierra Harder led the way for the Prairie Wolves as she had 11 kills on the night.
Karrie Sestak, another freshman, chipped in seven kills with two block assists.
Kelsey Bahe dished out 19 assists and junior
Kennedy Hegert continued her solid play at libero with 17 digs.
Midland finished the match hitting .443 as a team with 47 kills and only eight errors. KC Heimann led the way with 13 kills.
NWU's brutal stretch of matches continues on Saturday as they face their fourth straight ranked opponent, traveling to face Dordt College.
