LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan remained on top of the Great Plains Athletic Conference women's tennis standings as the Prairie Wolves defeated Midland University, 8-1, in women's tennis on Wednesday in Lincoln. The Midland men shutout the NWU men, 9-0, in the other match of the day.
The match was played at Knight Fieldhouse in Lincoln due to poor weather conditions. It was originally scheduled to be played in Fremont.
Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 2-0 in GPAC and 7-9 overall with the victory. The Prairie Wolves won all three doubles matches to take the early lead.
In singles play, the top three NWU players got easy straight set victories to seal the dual win.
Gaby Chaparro at No. 1 and
Katherine Ternent at No. 2 singles both won their matches in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Natalie Cech then won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0 to seal the win.
The final three singles matches were played to eight due to time restrictions.
Jennifer Heywood won at No. 4 singles, 8-4 and
Courtney Harder won 8-0 at No. 6 singles. The lone win for the Warriors was at No. 5 singles as Keelyn Dooley defeated
Jaime Bridges 8-3.
The Nebraska Wesleyan men played competitive matches, but still were unable to come up with their first victory in conference play. Midland swept the three doubles matches to take the early 3-0 lead.
At No. 1 singles Midland's Geovanny Satama and NWU's
Trevor Milburn battled for three sets. Satama came away with the 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 victory in the closest singles match of the day. The No. 3-No. 6 singles matches were played to eight similar to the women.
