LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan women's tennis team defeated Morningside College and Mount Marty College on Saturday to finish the conference regular season undefeated and win the 2015 GPAC Conference Championship.
It is the 10th GPAC Championship for the NWU women's tennis program as they have won four of the last five regular season titles.
NWU began the day with a match against Morningside, in a matchup of the only two remaining undefeated teams in GPAC women's tennis. The Prairie Wolves took two out of the three doubles matches to start off with the early advantage.
Katherine Ternent and Natalie Ceck won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and
Gaby Chaparro and
Jennifer Heywood were 8-5 winners at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play the Prairie Wolves won five of the six matches to earn the victory. Chaparro won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Ternent was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 3 and Cech won 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 3 singles. The other victories for the Prairie Wolves were Heywood at No. 4 singles and Tori VanDeVeer at No. 6 singles.
Against Mount Marty, the Prairie Wolves took all six singles matches. The doubles matches were not played giving NWU the conference championship.
Head Coach Rick Harley and the NWU women will now prepare for the 2015 GPAC Tennis Championships May 1-2 in Fremont, Neb. The winner of the tournament receives the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
