LINCOLN, Neb. -- An 8-run first inning was not enough for the Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team as Peru State scored 14 unanswered runs to defeat the Prairie Wolves 16-8 in a non conference game on Wednesday at NWU Field.
PSC (29-12) scored two runs to open the game before NWU had a huge bottom of the 1st inning. The Prairie Wolves first 10 batters of the game all reached safely with six hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error to give NWU eight runs. The biggest hit of the inning was a 2-run double by
Jordan Watteyne into the left field corner. A double play on a fly out to center field were the first two outs of the inning followed by a ground out as NWU sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.
From there, the Peru State pitching staff settled in and allowed just six hits the rest of the way and only one NWU runner got to 2nd base.
The Bobcats bats got hot as they scored five runs in the top of the 2nd and took advantage of three NWU errors in the inning. They took the lead at 11-8 in the top of the 4th inning as four runs came across. They added another run in the 6th and two each in the 7th and 8th innings.
Scott Villanueava had a huge day for Peru State coming up just a triple short of the cycle. Villaneuava was 5-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and five RBI. The Bobcats finished with 19 total hits including six doubles.
NWU finished with 12 total hits as three Prairie Wolves had multiple hits.Â
James McKain was 3-4 while
Justus Stocks and
John Estudillo both had two hits.
