Wolves Take Final Game in Series at Westminster

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Nebraska Wesleyan scored five runs in the top of the 9th inning to give the Prairie Wolves a 11-8 victory over Westminster College and salvage the final game of the three game series with the Bluejays.  Westminster won the first two games on Sunday, 9-3, and 15-2.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the eighth inning, NWU tied the game with three runs in the top of the inning.  John Estudillo led off with a double then scored on a single by Matt Orozco.  Joe Babic and James McKain both walked with the bases loaded to bring in the other two runs.

In the top of the ninth, NWU plated five runs on five hits.  The big hit of the inning was a 3-run home run by Colby McPike.  Justus Stocks and Joe Babic each had RBI singles.

Westminster scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play ended the game giving NWU their second win of the year.

Orozco and Estudillo both had three hits in the game.  McPike had two hits with a HR and three RBI, while Mark Korsakas was 2-4 with a HR and and RBI.

Matt Schommer started the game and went 6.0 innings allowing three earned runs (six total runs) on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Westminster had two big innings on Sunday to come away with the wins in their first games of the season.

In the opening game, Westminster scored two runs in the first inning and maintained that lead going into the 6th.  In the top of the 6th, Orozco hit a two-run single and Jordan Watteyne drove in a run on a fielder's choice to give the Prairie Wolves a 3-2 lead.

That lead was short lived as the Bluejays got the leadoff batter on to open the bottom of the inning.  A sacrifice moved the runner over, then relief pitcher James McKain entered the game and walked five straight batters to allow the Bluejays to score seven runs and earn the 9-3 win.

Mark Korsakas and McKain each had RBI doubles to open the second game as NWU built a 2-0 lead.  Westminster then scored 15 unanswered runs to win the second game 15-2 in just seven innings due to the run rule.

The Bluejays held a 6-2 lead after five innings then exploded for nine runs in the 6th inning as they hit three home runs in the inning.
