LINCOLN, Neb. --
Dalton Hegeholz scored the game winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the 7th inning as Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Buena Vista 4-3 in game one of a baseball doubleheader on Saturday. The Beavers took game two over the Prairie Wolves 3-1.
BVU led the opening game 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning. With two outs in the 5th,
Connor Bool drew a walk and
John Estudillo singled to get two runners on base.Â
Mark Korsakas entered as a pinch hitter and drove in two runs with a single to right field to tie the game.Â
Matt Orozco followed up with another RBI single to put the Prairie Wolves ahead.
The Beavers tied the game in the sixth with run of their own. In the bottom of the 7th,
John Babic and
James McKain had back-to-back walks.Â
Colby McPike then singled to load the bases.Â
Joe Babic came to the plate and on a swinging strike the BVU catcher missed the ball and it went to the backstop allowing Hegeholz to score.
NWU got a great pitching performance from freshman
Aaron Soriano. He threw a complete game allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits. The Prairie Wolves finished with six total hits with
Connor Bool going 2-2.
In the second game BVU went ahead 2-0 in the 3rd inning and that is all they would need. The two runs came on three walks and and a hit batter. That was the only hiccup in a solid pitching performance by
Matt Schommer. Schommer went 6 1/3 innings allowing just three hits with seven strikeouts.
Buena Vista's Justin Lange was even better on the mound. Lange allowed just two hits in eight innings with 11 strikeouts.
The lone run for NWU came in the 9th inning as Bool drew a walk with the bases loaded. The bases were still loaded with the tying run on second base but a ground out ended the game.
