HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan women's tennis team ended their spring break trip to Hilton Head with a victory to finish 1-3 on the week. NWU defeated Franklin College 9-0 after dropping matches to UW-Oshkosh, UW-Eau Claire and Bethel.
The Prairie Wolves, now 5-9 overall, dominated their final match in the 9-0 victory over Franklin on Friday (Mar. 27). NWU took all three doubles matches then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and all six overall. The loss for Franklin drops their record to 8-7.
In a 6-3 loss to Bethel on March 26, the Prairie Wolves had some impressive performances. At No. 1 singles,
Gaby Chaparro won 6-1, 7-5 over Bree Honer who was ranked #6 in the Central Region and #38 in the nation by the ITA. Also beating ranked opponents were the No. 1 doubles team of
Katherine Ternent &
Natalie Cech. They won 8-4 over Allie Hipp & Madelyn Weaver who were ranked #6 and #8 in the Central Region. Ternent also picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles for the other win of the day. It was the second time this season that Bethel had defeated the Prairie Wolves as they also matched up during the fall portion of the season.
A match against Wisconsin-Eau Claire was the toughest draw of the week for the Prairie Wolves as they lost 8-1 on March 25. UW-Eau Claire, which improved to 10-3 overall, won all three doubles matches and five of six singles competitions. Chapparo was the lone winner for the Prairie Wolves as she won 6-1, 6-2 over Maddie Johnson at No. 1 singles. The closest match of the day was No. 3 singles as Madison Rossebo held off NWU's
Natalie Cech 7-5, 1-6, 10-4.
NWU opened their week with a 5-4 setback to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on March 25. NWU took two out of three doubles matches with Cech & Ternent winning at No. 1 doubles and Chaparro &
Jaime Bridges winning No. 2 doubles. Chaparro and Ternent won both of their singles matches for their other wins on the day.
Chapparo finished the week with a perfect 4-0 record in singles matches to lead the Prairie Wolves.
