LINDSBORO, Kan. -- Nebraska Wesleyan held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th inning but Bethany College erupted for 14 unanswered runs in the final two innings to roll past the Prairie Wolves 17-4 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Swedes (13-15) scored four runs in the bottom of the 7th to lead 8-4, then put up 10 runs in the 8th inning as they took advantage of six walks and a hit batter by the NWU bullpen in the inning.
NWU trailed 3-0 after the first three innings then slowly chipped away at the lead. In the top of the 4th inning,
Aaron Ochsner got a two out 2-run single to right field to cut the lead to 3-2. The Prairie Wolves struck again the next inning as
Connor Bool walked and scored on a double down the line by
Joe Babic. Babic then scored on a single by
Matt Orozco giving the Prairie Wolves a 4-3 advantage.
Relief pitcher
Jordan Haas worked three scoreless innings for the Prairie Wolves before giving way to
Caleb Thiessen in the 7th. With one out in the 7th, NWU appeared to get out of a jam as third baseman Babic had the Bethany runner caught in a rundown. Unfortunately, an errant run during the chase allowed the runner to score and that was the first of four runs in the inning.
Mark Korsakas came in for his first pitching appearance in the 8th inning and struggled to find control. He recorded just one out while walking four and giving up seven runs.
The Prairie Wolves finished with just four hits on the day. Besides the RBI hits from Ochsner, Babic and Orozco,
James McKain added the only other hit.
NWU will open Great Plains Athletic Conference play this weekend hosting Dordt College and Northwestern College on Friday and Saturday. Â Â
