McPherson, Kan. -- The new era of Nebraska Wesleyan baseball under coach
Scott Ballinger began with a bang as the Prairie Wolves hit a home run in the first at-bat of the season and won 10-4 at McPherson College in McPherson, Kan. McPherson came back to take game two of the doubleheader 5-4.
It didn't take long for the Prairie Wolves to get on the scoreboard as
John Estudillo took the second pitch of the season and sent it over the right field fence. The Prairie Wolves got an RBI single from
James McKain to go ahead 2-0 in the 1st inning.
The 2-run advantage would be plenty for Prairie Wolves starting pitcher
Matt Schommer. The fifth-year senior did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 6th inning as went 5 2/3 without a hit. Schommer finished the complete game victory allowing just the one hit.
NWU scored at least one run in each of the first six innings of the game. Estudillo continued to produce with a double in the 2nd and he would score on a single by
Sam Ayars.Â
Joe Babic doubled in the 3rd inning and scored on a fielders choice.
In the 4th inning,
Chase Powers led off with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice. He then scored on a sacrifice fly from Estudillo.Â
Leading 6-2 headed to the 6th inning, the Prairie Wolves delivered the final blow. Estudillo singled and
Colby McPike walked. Newcomer
Mark Korsakas came to the plate and sent a shot over the centerfield fence for a 3-run home run.Â
Matt Orozco added an RBI pinch-hit double to complete the four-run inning.
The NWU defense did show effects of playing their first game outdoors as the Prairie Wolves committed six errors. Schommer allowed four runs, but no earned runs with just the one hit to go along with three strikeouts.
Estudillo led the NWU offense going 3-4 with three runs and two RBI.Â
James McKain also had two hits.
In the second game, NWU jumped ahead 1-0 early once again as Korsakas hit an RBI single to drive in
Sam Ayars. McPherson scored two runs in the bottom of the 1st to re-take the lead.
NWU tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning as Korsakas doubled and would score on a fielding error. The lead didn't last long as MC came back to take a 3-2 lead. Both teams added runs in the 4th inning as Estudillo drove in
Jordan Watteyne.
Trailing 5-3 headed to the 6th inning, the Prairie Wolves attempted to make one final comeback. Watteyne led off with a single and would score on a single by Estudillo. A walk to McPike put two the tying run on 3rd base bringing up Korsakas. He popped up to first base to end the threat. NWU went in order in the 7th to fall 5-4.
Jordyn Johnson took the loss on the mound allowing four earned runs on five hits in six innings of work. He walked just three with five strikeouts.
Estudillo was 3-4 with two RBI to lead the NWU offense. Korsakas had two hits with Watteyne going 2-2.
