CRETE, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan completed the season sweep over Doane College in men's basketball with a 89-79 victory over the rival Tigers on Wednesday night (Feb. 18) at the Haddix Center in Crete.
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves clinch a spot in the 2015 GPAC Postseason Tournament as they improve to 12-12 overall and 9-10 in conference play.
It was also a big night for junior
Trey Bardsley who hit a pair of free throws at the 3:20 mark of the game to give him 18 for the game and 1,000 for his career. Bardsley becomes the 35th player in NWU history to join the 1,000 point club and the first junior to accomplish the feat since Kipp Kissinger in 1996-97.
The Tigers led for the majority of the first half until the 3:24 mark when
Keithan Karn hit a 3-pointer to put NWU ahead 32-31. The two teams traded leads then NWU went on a big run of 3-pointers to build up a 47-38 halftime lead.
NWU made 10 3-pointers in the first half going 10-20 from beyond the arc.
Nebraska Wesleyan built their lead up to 10 points in the second half. Doane came storming back and pulled within one point. From there, NWU switched to a zone defense to confuse the Tigers and the Prairie Wolves were able to get back to their double digit lead.
NWU finished the game shooting 47.6 percent from the field, making 12-34 from 3-point range. The Prairie Wolves outrebounded the Tigers by nine and held Doane to just 46.9 percent shooting.
Travis Giesselmann led the Prairie Wolves with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Bardsley finished with 18 points and got exactly 1,000 points. The other player in double figures was
Nick Stine with 13.
Nate Kuhl added a double-double for Doane with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Deonte Holt added 18 points.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to move up the GPAC standings and improve their seed as they host Mount Marty College on Saturday afternoon at Snyder Arena for Senior Day.
