LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan sent their seniors out in style as they defeated Mount Marty College, 97-73, in GPAC men's basketball action to close out the 2014-15 season on Senior Day at Snyder Arena.
With the victory, the Prairie Wolves improve to 13-12 overall and move up to 10-10 in GPAC play. They earn the No. 5 seed in the GPAC Tournament and will face No. 4 seed Briar Cliff University, in the first round on Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa.
Nebraska Wesleyan struggled shooting to start the game and winless Mount Marty hung around. The game was tied 15-15, but NWU scored five unanswered and never trailed again. NWU hit just 7-of-23 from 3-point range in the first half and only 44.7 from the field but led 49-40 at the break.
In the second half, the Prairie Wolves used a 10-2 run to build up a 15-point lead with 14:36 to play. The lead would be extended to as many as 25 points with seven minutes left. NWU then had reserves play the final five minutes of the contest and let the seniors exit to a standing ovation.
Four players scored in double figures for the Prairie Wolves despite shooting just 11-42 from 3-point range. The Prairie Wolves made 46.8 from the field for the game and outrebounded the Lancers by 10.
Trey Bardsley led the way with 21 points, making 5-11 from 3-point range and 4-4 at the free throw line.Â
Byron Thompson finished his career with 15 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists.Â
Travis Giesselmann scored 14 and
Blake Ruiz was a perfect 5-5 from the floor for 11 poitns.
Bud Smith had a game-high 25 points to lead Mount Marty.
