Hastings Knocks Off NWU 103-94

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Hastings College outscored Nebraska Wesleyan 12-5 over the last 2:00 minutes as the Broncos came into Snyder Arena and defeated the Prairie Wolves 103-94 in GPAC men's basketball action on Wednesday night (Feb. 11). 

Connor Musiel hit back-to-back 3-pointers to break open a tie game with just under three minutes left and hit two free throws to put the Broncos up 93-89 with 1:42 left.  NWU had three straight empty possessions while Hastings went 4-4 at the free throw line to go up by eight points.  NWU got back within six points on three different times, but could get no closer.

The game featured two teams that were tied in the GPAC standings headed into Wednesday night.  It was a back and forth game with nine lead changes and the game was tied on 12 occasions.  In the end it was the Broncos that remain in a tie for 6th in the GPAC standings while NWU falls into a tie for 8th.

A big difference in the game came at the free throw line where the Broncos were 33-41 at the charity stripe, compared to just 17-24 for NWU.  The game had 51 total fouls as the Broncos outscored the Prairie Wolves by 16 points at the stripe.

Hastings shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the 2nd half as they overcame a five point halftime deficit.  The Broncos finished the game shooting 56.4 percent for the game, compared to 47.8 for NWU.  The Prairie Wolves did make 11-33 from 3-point land, but only five in the second half.

Tobin Reinwald led all scorers with 35 points for Hastings.  Reinwald was 14-15 at the free throw line and 10-15 from the floor.  Musiel came off the bench to score 23 points on 4-8 from 3-point range.  Zach Lenagh scored 156, while Carson Blum had a double-double of 11 points, 11 rebounds.

For Nebraska Wesleyan, Travis Giesselmann had 29 points before fouling out with 1:42 to play.  He was 4-6 from 3-point land.  Byron Thompson scored 18 points with six assists, while Trey Bardsley had 16 points taking only 11 shot attempts.  He also missed two free throws as his streak ended at 31 straight, two off the school record.

NWU will now need to bounce back on Saturday with a tough trip to Dordt College.
