LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan University women's tennis team picked up their first victory of the 2014-15 season as they defeated Ottawa University, 8-1, on Friday night (Jan. 30) at Woods Park in Lincoln. NWU then dropped a 9-0 decision at Augustana College on Sunday morning in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Nebraska Wesleyan opened the Ottawa match by winning all three doubles matches.
Katherine Ternent and
Natalie Cech won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles and Gaby Chapparo and
Jennifer Heywood were 8-3 winners at No. 2 doubles. NWU won No. 3 doubles by default.
In singles play, Chapparo was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles in her first match at the top position. Ternent picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, while Cech won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Heywood was a 7-5, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles to complete the victories for the Prairie Wolves. They won at No. 6 singles by default. The lone loss for NWU was at No. 5 singles as Danika Good defeated Tori VanDeVeer 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the most competitive match of the day.
Nebraska Wesleyan faced much tougher competition on Sunday against NCAA Division II Augustana College. The Vikings won every match in straight sets, including two 8-3 victories in doubles action. NWU was open at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles to allow the Vikings to get two wins at those spots.
