HASTINGS, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan pulled within five points of 19th-ranked Hastings College early in the second half but the nationally-ranked Broncos went on a run to pull away for a 78-61 victory over the Prairie Wolves in GPAC women's basketball action.
NWU (2-11, 0-8 GPAC) trailed by only eight points at halftime with the score 37-29. The Broncos maintained that advantage early in the second half before back-to-back baskets by
Felicia TeKolste cut the lead down to 47-42 with 16:45 remaining. After the TeKolste basket the Prairie Wolves went on a scoring drought as Hastings scored 11 unanswered points to go ahead 58-42 and NWU couldn't recover.
A big reason for the second half surge was the play of
Felicia TeKolste. TeKolste scored 20 points in the second half and 26 for the game. She was 11-22 from the floor, hitting eight field goals and a 3-pointer in the 2nd half. She kept the Prairie Wolves close, as NWU shot 43.8 percent in the 2nd half.
Hastings got out to a fast start as Michaela Barry made four 3-pointers in the first half and ended with a team-high 16 points.
Besides TeKolste's 26 points, two other NWU players scored in double figures.Â
Bridget Bucher had a big double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, while
Courtney Cook ended with 10 points before fouling out.
As a team the Prairie Wolves finished the game shooting 41.7 percent from the floor and 28.6 from 3-point range. The Broncos shot 44 percent and held a +3 advantage in rebounding.
