Nebraska Wesleyan's string of NAIA National Tournament appearances came to an end on Friday as the Prairie Wolves fell in the semifinals of the GPAC Women's Tennis Postseason Tournament. NWU fell 5-3 to Morningside College after defeating Hastings College 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
Nebraska Wesleyan ends their season with a 10-11 overall record. NWU, which played their conference portion of the schedule without their top two players, had won three straight GPAC Tournaments and advanced to nationals for three consecutive seasons.
NWU and Morningside played a very competitive match in the semifinals on Friday at the Fremont High School tennis complex in Fremont, Neb. The Mustangs took two of the three doubles matches to go up 2-1.
Jennifer Heywood and
Addie Litterick won an 8-6 match at No. 2 doubles for the lone win for the Prairie Wolves.
In singles play, the Prairie Wolves got two impressive wins at the top of the lineup.
Hannah Husmann won 6-4, 6-4 over Katie Hanson at No. 1 singles.
Natalie Cech then rallied back to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles over Jeannine Stocker. Unfortunately, those would be the only two singles wins for the Prairie Wolves. Heywood lost 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 3 singles,
Courtney Harder fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 and
Jaime Bridges lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Nebraska Wesleyan breezed through Hastings College in the GPAC Quarterfinals to advance to the next round. The only win for the Broncos was a singles match where
Addie Litterick retired before completion of the match.
