Women End Regular Season By Splitting Matches

The Nebraska Wesleyan women's tennis team finished the 2014 regular season by splitting its two GPAC matches on Saturday (Apr. 26).  NWU started the morning with a 6-3 loss to Morningside College, then traveled to Yankton and won 8-1 over Mount Marty College.

With the win, NWU finished 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the GPAC.  The Prairie Wolves currently sit in second place in the league standings and must await other teams to complete their matches to find out their seed at the GPAC Postseason Tournament.

In the morning match at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, the Prairie Wolves won two of the three doubles matches.  Hannah Husmann and Natalie Cech won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and Jennifer Heywood and Addie Litterick joined up to win No. 2 doubles.

Matches remained competitive in singles play, but the Mustang won five of the six matches.  The lone singles win for NWU was at No. 3 singles with Jennifer Heywood winning 2-6, 6-3, 13-11 at No. 3 singles over Audri Swisher.  The No. 5 singles match between Courtney Harder of NWU and Kathryn Jones of Morningside also went three sets with Jones winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Nebraska Wesleyan got back on track with a 8-1 win over Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D., that afternoon.

NWU won all three doubles matches and took five of the six singles matches.  The only victory for the Lancers came at No. 1 singles with Vanessa Rockne defeating Hannah Husmann 6-4, 6-1.  NWU did need three sets to win their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.  Natalie Cech won 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 2, while Jennifer Heywood won 6-1, 4-6, 10-3 at No. 3 singles.

NWU now prepares for the GPAC Postseason Tournament where they aim to earn a spot at the NAIA National Tournament for the fourth straight year and sixth time in the past seven seasons.  The GPAC Tournament winner receives an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Alabama.
