Postseason Hopes Halted at Hastings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Nebraska Wesleyan went on the road and dropped a pair of key Great Plains Athletic Conference softball games on Thursday night (Apr. 24) to Hastings College losing game one 6-2, then falling 3-2 in the nightcap.

With the losses, the Prairie Wolves are eliminated from contention for the GPAC Postseason Tournament.  NWU falls to 14-20 overall and 5-13 in GPAC play with one doubleheader remaining on Saturday at Dordt College.

NWU fell behind 2-0 in game one after the first inning and the Prairie Wolves were never able to catch up.

At the plate, Nebraska Wesleyan was limited to just three hits for the game.  Kayla Randel hit a pair of solo home runs to score both games.  Randel hit a solo blast in the 3rd inning, then added her second home run of the game in the 6th inning.

Taylor Erlenbusch limited the rest of the NWU bats as Rachel Kubik was the only other Prairie Wolf to record a hit.  Erlenbusch recorded nine strikeouts in the game.

Game two got off to a better start for NWU as they got an early lead.  Randel singled and would eventually score on an error by the Broncos third baseman to put the Prairie Wolves up 1-0 in the top of the 3rd.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Hastings responded with two runs of their own as they took advantage of a walk, hit batter and NWU error.

The Prairie Wolves would tie the game in the top of the 7th inning as Betsy Reimer singled to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a sacrifice then moved to third on an error and scored on the next batter when another error was committed.

Hastings got their lead off batter on to start the bottom of the 7th, but a NWU double play gave the Prairie Wolves two outs looking to force extra innings.  Two singles put runners in scoring position for the winning run, then Kelsey Hoehler got the game-winning single for the 3-2 win.

NWU had just three hits in the second game and committed seven errors on defense.
