NWU Finishes 1-3 at McPherson Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Nebraska Wesleyan ended the weekend at the McPherson College Tournament with a 9-1 win over Bethel College to earn their first win of the two day tournament going 1-3 over the weekend.  The Prairie Wolves dropped all three games on Friday losing to Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson and Bethany.

On Friday, it was the Prairie Wolves offense that held them back as they managed just nine total hits in three games.

The day started off with a 5-0 loss to Kansas Wesleyan on Friday morning.  NWU loaded the bases with no outs to begin the game, but was unable to score a run and that would be a sign for Prairie Wolves offensive struggles on the day.  In the bottom of the first, KWU hit back-to-back home runs to open up a 3-0 lead and they would cruise from there.

In the second game against the host school McPherson College, the Prairie Wolves lost by an identical 5-0 score.  Nebraska Wesleyan managed five hits against McPherson, but all were singles as they could never string together any runs.  McPherson scored two runs in the second and three more in the third inning to earn the win.

To close out the day, the Prairie Wolves lost a 5-1 decision to Bethany College from Kansas.  NWU once again only had two hits in the game, and also committed four errors in the field.  Bethany had just four hits but took advantage of the NWU errors.  The Prairie Wolves got on the board in the third inning after already trailing 2-0.  Kayla Randel hit an RBI single for the only run of the entire day for NWU.

Nebraska Wesleyan responded on Saturday to snap their five game losing streak with a 9-1 win over Bethel.  The Prairie Wolves bats woke up as they pounded out 14 hits, including four doubles on the way to the eight run win.  Six of the runs came in the final two innings as NWU led just 3-1 going into the sixth inning.

Chaley Hamilton hit a 2-run single in the top of the first to put the Prairie Wolves up 2-0.  Bethel got their lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.  NWU took advantage of a Bethel error in the fifth inning to score another run to extend their lead to two runs.

Rachel Kubik had a 2-run single and Claire Poppe hit an RBI double in the sixth for the Prairie Wolves then in the seventh Randel and Marisa Garver both hit RBI doubles.

Megan Cottier got the win going four innings allowing just three hits and one run.  Chaley Hamilton recorded a save pitching the final three innings allowing just one hit and no runs.  Kayla Randel was 3-5 with two doubles an RBI and a stolen base.  Hamilton also was 2-4 with three RBI.
